Traditional publishing

By 'independent publishing', I refer to the whole range of opportunities that have become available in recent years for you to produce and sell your own book. On the one end of the scale is what I refer to as 'self-publishing': you handle the editing, design, printing and sales of the book yourself. This is often a decision based less on your skill and expertise at these roles, and more on lack of budget to pay experts. Many people choose to self-publish because no traditional publisher wants to publish their book.

On the other end of the scale is the production of a top-knotch book that is all about quality, produced by a specialist team tailored to that book's specific production and sales requirements. This might be a good choice for those who know they can reach their target market directly, without the help of a publisher, and who have access to the funds required to hire specialist designers, editors, printers and distributors.

Publishing rights

We look at the various types of rights and how you can negotiate them. It is important that you negotiate these rights upfront, rather than signing a contract and then becoming aware of the rights you have given away without having considered the implications.

Common book photography mistakes

While the principles of photography are no different to books than they are for publication elsewhere, the format of a book does have an impact on the image that will be printed inside of it or on its cover. Here we look at the few mistakes that frustrate publishers most.
